My sister Cécile and I cherisch the tradition to ride one bike weekend a year together. May 16th - May 18th 2003 we went to the Rockanje Classic Races. We'd never been there, nor at any classic races, but there was a streetfightershow I could join. And it's very close to the sea, so, why not?
Most of our trips start with rain, continue with rain, and end with rain. The 2003 trip was no different. It didn't spoil our fun though. And there were dry and even sunny moments.
Saturday our cousins Godfried and Wilbert joined the party. We hadn't seen them for more than ten years. Our mutual interest in bikes renewed the bond.
Saturday morning, 06.45 h., I rode the bike to the exposition area.
It was the first time a streetfighter show was organized at the Classic Races. Some fifteen bikes showed up.
Though being not quite a classic bike the CBX draw a lot of attention.
Winning the show (yes!) I rode two laps of honour, which was a lot of fun!
The main event for the 10,000 visitors of course were the 140 classic bikes and sidecars that competed that day. Fairly old men with grim faces on even older bikes. Producing a lot of smoke, noise and entertainment.
In the afternoon they asked me to ride the bike in a huge marquee. It turned out to be quite stressful pushing and pulling the bike on stage.
But I have to admit it looked good.
At a prize giving ceremony I was interviewed about the how, when and why of my bike.
Former GP500 racer Randy Mamola was the guest star of a 'Riders for Health' auction, a good cause. Whilst the CBX temporary served as a ... coat hanger.
As a prize I was promised a unique steel miniature model of my bike, made by Kado UnieK.
A month later the 23 cm artpiece arrived.
It may not be the most prestigious prize I won, but it looks the best for sure!
